Literacy
Literacy skills encompass reading and writing.
At Communicating Kids interventions are always individualized for your child's needs. We use a variety of multisensory, evidence based approaches to help struggling emergent readers, including those with dyslexia become confident readers. Oral language is a prerequisite to written language and children struggling to learn to read are typically weak in phonological awareness.
Phonological awareness is the ability to understand that spoken words are made up of individual sounds and being able to manipulate sounds in words. Phonological awareness skills such as rhyming, identifying sounds in words (phonemic awareness), identifying syllables and sounding out words are precursors to reading and spelling. Phonics involves matching sounds to printed letters. Interventions targeting both phonemic skills and phonics are proven to help children who are struggling to read improve reading skills.
Communicating Kids can help your child with all aspects of literacy including vocabulary, reading comprehension, spelling, story telling, grammar, writing and more.
We offer 45 minute and 60 minute literacy sessions in the comfort of your own home, in-person or virtually. Time to consult with the speech-language pathologist is built into every session. This is your time to ask questions, hear about your child's progress and learn how to support your child's continued learning at home.
